Answers to Questions In Response to the Lecture by Sugata Mitra’s titled “How Kids Teach Themselves"

1. What do you think? If learners are motivated, can they teach themselves?

I know that when someone is motivated and engaged in the learning process they can teach themselves.

2. If those motivated learners are kids, can they teach themselves?

If they are motivated kids and have someone to share it with and discuss then yes!

3. What conditions are necessary for kids to teach themselves? For anyone to teach him or herself?

They need to be engaged with the learning experience, motivated and have someone to communicate with about it. Something like the Gradmother method would be useful in providing the right conditions for learning.

Computers and the internet perform the role of an endless textbook. The computer can translate languages and provide games designed to foster learning

Motivation and desire are needed to learn. If someone doesn’t care they will not pay attention and reject the information given.

6. What roles do a problem, a question or multiple problems or questions play in the process?

Asking questions, giving a topic or purposing a problem provide the much needed focus.

7. How do you motivate someone to learn?

The best way is to be supportive, complimentary, and to make it fun!

8. How are you motivated to learn?

At this point in my life I am self motivated to learn because I find the more I learn the more amazing, beautiful and interesting the world becomes. It is a never ending exploration that I am excited to delve into more and more every day.

9. Can anyone who is not motivated to learn learn?

I do not think someone can learn without allowing it to happen and that requires motivation.

10. Do you teach yourself? When? Why?

I teach myself all the time. I learn through the books I choose to read, the movies I choose to watch, the Ted talks I watch, the NPR radio I tune into and the music I chose to listen to. I do this all day long because I enjoy being engaged with life. Learning about every aspect of this world enhances my experiences.

11. What role does a teacher (either answer generally or use a specific example) play in your learning?

In today’s world there are massive amounts of information and topics to explore. Teachers guide students through questions to help filter out all the garbage information and help focus their attention. They also provide the important framework and continual reassurance needed to perpetuate learning.

12. What is the most important idea, question or emotional response you take away with you as a result of watching this video?

I believe that in time they will prove that education is a self organizing system where learning is an emergent phenomenon. Once this is understood I think the way we educate the next generation will change. I am excited to be a part of a future where all students can be part of a collective classroom and encourage each other to keep on learning.

13. What other questions or issues are raised by this video that should be considered and discussed by aspiring teachers?

This video raises the question for teachers as to how they can design a curriculum for learning that incorporates self directed learning. Teachers need to understand how to ask the right questions, provide inspiration and be supportive.
